The Mighty Grossglockner High Alpine Road is, at 2504 metres, the highest paved road in Austria and we will be riding this epic road in September 2022 as we ride south to Croatia for our Adriatic Tour.
The toll road is approximately 30 miles in length however we add a couple more miles to that with a short trip to see the glacier and Franz-Josefs-Höhe viewpoint.

Opened on the 3rd of August 1935 the road, planed since 1924, took 5 years to construct and is only open between the beginning of May and end of October. The route passes over an alpine divide which is marked with a tunnel and over the course of the 30 miles enjoy constant panoramic of stunning views.
To enjoy the view even more we ride to the Edelweisshutte (2571 metres) and enjoy a spot of lunch or coffee/cake depending on the time we arrive.

But riding is one part of it. There is a chance to get a much closer look at the Glacier and wander up to the magnificent Franz-Josefs-Höhe viewpoint, not forgetting the all important Edelweiss sticker for the pannier and a fluffy marmot, just don't try taking home a real one, they bite!
To experience the Grossglockner and along more join us on our Adriatic Tour 11-25 September. See the Tours Page for info but hurry, time is limited for booking.
