New Triumph Tiger 1200 Prototype Reveal

Writer: John WiltonJohn Wilton

So here it is folks, the buzz has been around for a little while and now Triumph have released these lightly disguised photographs on the new Tiger 1200 and if the images are anything to go by it is looking good!

So cue some gratuitous off-road shots of the bike being put through it's paces but rightly so, as it has a huge market to impact. The adventure touring market is easily the fastest growing motorcycle market and is attracting more new riders than any other area. It is such a big chunk of the pie that even Harley Davidson have thrown themselves in to the arena with their 'marmite' Pan America. Triumph not only have to contend with the big US firm but also have their age old rivals, BMW to take on and the mighty R1250GS and GSA. No doubt there will be many who wouldn't have even bothered with a second look at the Tiger in it's old guise but hold on a minute. Triumph riders are rightly proud of their Tigers and this is going to really shake things up.

So, lighter and more powerful are the first and most obvious claims. The 'triple' engine is likely to offer a lot more horses than it's predecessor which came in around 139bhp. The new Tiger's engine coming across from the newest Speed Triple which unapologetically kicks out 177bhp at around 10,000rpms. Even the toned down version of this unit will pack one mighty punch. And lighter too? Let's hope so, as the old Tiger was surprisingly heavy, even when compared to BMW's GS. Surely a little diet is welcome news.

The radiator has been considered, having been split and moved to afford more protection behind the side panels giving the opportunity to increase suspension travel and compression.

It's safe to assume that the Tiger 1200 is going to be 'down with the kids' when is comes to technology, be it electronic suspension, riding modes, traction control, smartphone connectivity and navigation.

Now that this rather revealing teaser has been published it won't be long before we get to see the colour options, accessories and prices and I admit, I am a little bit excited! Triumph, please give us some good colours and top panniers!

We will keep you up to date with news as it comes in.

Should BMW be concerned? I think so.

As should the others...
