Brandolini’s Law

Brandolini’s Law says that it takes far more effort to refute nonsense than it does to create it.

Imagine someone claims that putting sugar in your car’s fuel tank will make the engine run better. It takes them five seconds to say it.

But proving it’s wrong requires explaining how engines work, what fuel injectors do, how sugar doesn’t dissolve properly in petrol, and how it would actually damage the fuel system. That explanation might take several minutes or even a full article.

So the key idea is simple:
False or misleading claims are quick and easy to make, but properly correcting them takes much more time and effort.

The person telling the lie needs loyal, blind supporters who don’t have the ability to think for themselves and will repeat the lie.

Those wishing to rebuke the lie have to apply effort, research and resilience all of which takes considerably more time.

By the time evidence is revealed to rebuke the lie, 10 more equally absurd lies have been spoken.

The followers continue to blindly follow and believe what they are told.

Those who question the lie start again with research, effort, resilience to disprove.
